Rhythms for a Weekly Reset + Printable

Habits homeschool Motherhood Planning

One of the very best things I can do for our homeschool is to practice a Sunday reset. Everyone has their own way to Sabbath and rest and this is a very practical way that sets the tone our week. Each Sunday that I do this our week goes smoother, I feel more at peace and I'm able to be more present.

1. Preparing For Our School Week

Since I plan out our whole school year in the summer I can go into a homeschool week blind.

Maybe you have a curriculum like this  that you can open to the right page and just dive in. That's such a great feature to have, but I've personally found that in order to be the best teacher I can be, I need to (at minimum) look over what I'll be teaching that week.

On Sundays I take a few minutes to look over what is assigned for the week and pull the books I'll be using for Monday. I lay them out in our stacks (one stack for each of my children and one for me that includes any family subjects or books I'm reading aloud to more than one child).

I look over anything that might be out of the ordinary (for example, if we're starting a new  book mid-week I'll grab it from our shelf or if a handicraft requires prep work I will grab out those supplies) and I try to take some time to see where we might hit any roadblocks.

If I know we're having a field trip or guests one day then I would try and stack our subjects so that they're lighter on those days.

In total, this typically takes about 20 minutes.

2. Preparing For Our Meals

When you're homeschooling it feels like you're always in the kitchen making food. Someone is always hungry and dinner sneaks up on you way faster than you think.

I will sit down and plan out our meals for the week and then prep anything I can. I love doing this with an audiobook on. This consists of something like chopping vegetables for a quick side dish for lunch, prepping a tuna salad or egg salad, making muffins for an easy breakfast, preparing ground meat for tacos or casserole or hamburger patties, making granola, salad dressing, brownies or a loaf of bread.

Someone once told me about using all of your "robots". It's this concept that we have a ton of tools at our disposal--bread makers, mixers, ovens, dehydrators, waffle makers, and so many others--that we can prep a lot for our week when we make all of our "robots" work together.

It feels like a lot of work at the time, but it really pays off in the long run. The rest of our week I spend significantly less time in the kitchen and everything feels easy to throw together. I don't do this every single week (probably 7 out of 10 weeks) but when I do it makes a world of difference. I'm telling you, it's a game changer!

Usually, this takes me about 2-2 1/2 hours.

3. Preparing For Our Extra Curricular Activities & Work

I'll look ahead at our week and think through anything I need to prepare for our extra curriculars. That might mean packing our backpacks with our watercolors, field guide and snacks so that I'm not scrambling to do that on the day of our nature club. Or that might be making sure certain uniforms or gear gets washed.

I don't like to be rushed (honestly, this is probably a huge reason we homeschool), so this way our week can flow a little smoother. I also might check to see what library books we have due back that week (we have four library systems we utilize on a regular basis) or if there are special events I need to prepare for.

I look at my work week and might batch out a few pieces of content for the week or polish off a blog or email, if there is time.

This takes me about 10 minutes. The work portion takes much longer but I add that in if I feel like there is leftover time or margin to do so.

Creating Your Own Weekly Reset

Maybe Sunday's are NOT the day for you, but maybe a Friday or Tuesday might be the day you have open to do some preparation. Here’s an example of how I plan it out  I write all of our meals and plans on one paper and the make a list of everything I could prep ahead of time.

Sometimes I get to all of it, sometimes I do not. That’s okay. It doesn't matter if you get to everything or what day you do this, but if you want to give it a try, check out my free printable!

I hope you've found some of this helpful and that you'll maybe try out one of these ideas for yourself! If you do, let me know how your own weekly reset goes!
